Northrop Subsidiary to Produce More Void Sensing Fuzes Under $110M Air Force Contract

Alliant Techsystems Operations, a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC), has received a $109.9M contract from the U.S. Air Force to manufacture additional cockpit-programmable fuzes designed to help warfighters destroy buried targets. The contract is for the full-rate production of lots 2 and 3 Hard Target Void Sensing Fuze systems along with spares, training equipment and support services, the Department of Defense said Friday.

USAF is obligating the full contract amount at the time of award from its ammunition procurement funds from fiscal years 2017, 2018 and 2019. Work will occur through July 31, 2023, at the Rocket Center in West Virginia.

Orbital ATK, which Northrop acquired last year, developed the FMU-167/B HTVSF technology for the service branch. The fuze is equipped with solid state electronics and designed to operate with air-delivered penetrating weapons that weigh 2,000 to 5,000 pounds such the BLU-109 and BLU-113 bombs.
