A Maxar Technologies (NYSE: MAXR) subsidiary has secured a $39.3 million other transaction agreement to help the U.S. Army develop a 3D geospatial dataset for the second phase of a potential $94.7 million prototype project.
Vricon aims to produce a virtual model of Earth’s terrain that will be accessible through the service branch’s network under the One World Terrain program, Maxar said Wednesday.
OWT will function as a key component of the Synthetic Training Environment-Information System development initiative led by a cross-functional team at Army Futures Command. STE is designed to integrate virtual and live, physical training elements into a unified platform.
“Beyond essential simulation-ready training data, potential applications for OWT include situational awareness, mission planning, navigation and targeting,” said Maxar CEO Dan Jablonsky.
He added that the company seeks to bring its 3D terrain products to multiple sectors worldwide.
McLean, Virginia-based Vricon won an initial $35.8 million contract to support the Army’s OWT program in June 2019, one year before Maxar acquired the geospatial software provider.
The first phase, which concluded in late 2020, covered simulation and training aspects. The next phase will focus on developing geospatial tools for the Army’s multidomain, non-training and mission command operations.
