Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) will develop a 5G communications network testbed for the U.S. Marine Corps and the office of the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering under a $19.3 million prototype project agreement with the Department of Defense.
Lockheed said Wednesday it will work with Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), DISH Wireless, Rampart Communications and Radisys to build the 5G testbed, called Open Systems Interoperable and Reconfigurable Infrastructure Solution, at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California and expects work on OSIRIS to conclude in September 2024.
OSIRIS is part of Lockheed’s 5G.MIL programs and seeks to meet the need for testing facilities that enable dual-use application prototyping and rapid experimentation. The testbed will explore the military use of commercial 5G technology platforms by allowing the connection of 5G-ready vehicles, sensors, user devices and other endpoints and help advance DOD’s Joint All Domain Operations concept.
“OSIRIS will serve as a critical proof point of Lockheed Martin’s 5G.MIL capabilities,” said Deon Viergutz, vice president of spectrum convergence at Lockheed.
“We are integrating the technical capabilities of 5G waveforms, software and hardware with higher bandwidth and low-latency data rates into our defense products to enhance their performance for our warfighters. We want to ensure that warfighters operating in communications contested and denied environments have resilient access to data to perform their missions anywhere in the world,” added Viergutz.
