Lockheed Secures $258M USSF Contract to Build Satcom Payload Tech

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has been awarded a $258.3M contract to develop and demonstrate a prototype of the U.S. Space Force's Evolved Strategic Satellite Communication payload.

The company will conduct a loop testing of ESS hardware and software as part of the sole-source acquisition contract that runs through June 2025, the Department of Defense said Monday.

USSF's Space and Missile Systems Center will obligate $29.4M in fiscal 2020 research, development, test and evaluation funds at the time of award.

According to SMC’s request for information for the ESS and Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared programs, the military service wants to deploy classified information technology infrastructure for defense satcom modernization push.

The branch previously awarded Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) and Boeing (NYSE: BA) separate ESS development contracts valued at $298M each.
