A team of Leidos (NYSE: LDOS) and Thales has secured a potential 12-year, $450M contract to help the Federal Aviation Administration replace a secondary surveillance radar system used to deliver aircraft data as part of air traffic control automation efforts.
Both companies will work to design, build, engineer, test, evaluate and implement a new Mode S beacon platform for the agency, Leidos said Wednesday.
The contract, which has four base years plus four two-year option periods, also includes program management and training services.
FAA maintains 137 operational Mode S radars and 11 support systems within the National Airspace System. The agency sought a replacement designed to increase system performance and availability, address interface requirements and comply with security standards.
