L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has received a multimillion-dollar contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop a platform designed to help the military identify objects in large sets of imagery data using artificial intelligence, C4ISRNET reported Wednesday.
The company intends to use modeling and simulation capabilities to facilitate the development of training data to teach a machine learning algorithm to detect hostile objects in satellite imagery.
“All of that summed up—we make very good fake imagery,” said Will Rorrer, principal of business development for geospatial at L3Harris. “We’ve taken that technology that was essentially developed for another reason and pivoted (to using it) as a source of synthetic training data for these neural net applications.”
The contract awarded by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center included a base term and option years.
