BWXT Promotes Kurt Bender to SVP, Chief Digital Officer

BWX Technologies has promoted Kurt Bender to senior vice president and chief digital officer to support digital modernization efforts across operations in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

BWXT said Thursday that Bender’s appointment comes as the company opens a new digital center in Melbourne, Florida, designed to serve as a hub for enterprise-wide initiatives tied to artificial intelligence, automation, cybersecurity and smart operations.

Bender replaces Omar Meguid, who was named BWXT’s first chief digital officer in 2023.

“His leadership is essential to building a culture of innovation and ensuring we deliver with the safety, speed, agility and excellence that have set us apart in the nuclear industry for more than 70 years,” Rex Geveden, BWXT president and CEO, commented on Bender’s promotion.

What Experience Does Kurt Bender Bring to the Role?

Bender most recently served as BWXT’s vice president of IT applications, quality and continuous improvement. In that role, he oversaw modernization of core systems and AI technologies, cybersecurity efforts and governance frameworks.

According to BWXT, Bender has more than 22 years of experience supporting digital transformation initiatives across the aerospace, defense and technology sectors, including previous roles at L3Harris Technologies and BAE Systems.

How Does BWXT’s Digital Center Support Its Digital Strategy?

BWXT said its 11,600-square-foot digital center is intended to strengthen digital modernization efforts across the enterprise while expanding the company’s footprint within Florida’s Space Coast defense and aerospace community.

The facility will support more than 40 employees and will focus on advancing AI-enabled decision-making tools and cybersecurity measures to meet evolving customer requirements.

“This new Digital Center demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement throughout our operations and, importantly, grants us access to a very large pool of technical talent on Florida’s Space Coast,” Geveden said.
