Kongsberg Discovery to Acquire Sonatech, Expand US Market

Kongsberg Discovery has agreed to acquire Sonatech as part of efforts to expand its technology portfolio and grow its business in the U.S. Navy market.

The global technology company said Tuesday the acquisition of Sonatech, an engineering and manufacturing company specializing in underwater acoustics, will be finalized later in 2025, pending government approvals.

Expanding Portfolio with Underwater Technology

Sonatech has been in the industry for over five decades and has established itself as one of the leading experts in undersea acoustics. The Santa Barbara, California-based company offers advanced sonar technologies, specializing in the design, development and production of sophisticated systems utilized in nearly all classes of Navy underwater systems.

Driving U.S. Market Growth

Kongsberg aims to leverage Sonatech’s relations with the defense sector, particularly with the Navy, to boost its presence in the U.S. market. In addition, the acquisition is intended to establish Kongsberg as an expert in the ocean space.

“Sonatech has a strong and solid relationship with the U.S. Navy. With our combined technology portfolio and expertise, we will broaden the systems and products available for the U.S. Navy,” said Martin Wien Fjell, executive vice president of KONGSBERG and president of Kongsberg Discovery.

“We have provided reliable, high-performance acoustic products and technical services to meet the demanding specifications of the U.S. Navy and other clients for half a century. We are thrilled to become a part of the Kongsberg Discovery family,” remarked Mark Shaw, president of Sonatech.
