How Will KBR Support DOT?
The Houston, Texas-headquartered company said Monday that it will provide AI, machine learning, modeling and simulation, modern web frameworks, data and analytics, and engineering services to the Department of Transportation’s John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center.
The award, made under the Transportation, Technology & Engineering Mission Solutions blanket purchase agreement, spans the Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other DOT modal agencies.
“We deliver AI-powered critical technologies and engineering expertise faster, helping customers enhance infrastructure and respond rapidly to evolving transportation challenges,” Todd May, senior vice president of mission technology solutions at KBR, stated.
Work will be performed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and other sites worldwide. TTEMS is a five-year BPA issued through the General Services Administration Multiple Award Schedule program.
KBR’s History of Supporting DOT’s Volpe Center
KBR has been a long-time partner of the Volpe Center and the DOT. In 2021, the science, technology and engineering services provider secured the Mission Information Technology Support contract, valued at $126.7 million over four years, for logistical, technical and safety systems update at the Volpe Center.
KBR also said that, for over 15 years, it has supported various DOT missions by:
- Developing intelligent transportation Systems to reduce road accidents and improve traffic flow
- Advancing position, navigation and timing technologies to enhance situational awareness for transportation coordination and automated vehicles
- Deploying the System Approach for Safety Oversight that can identify risks in aviation
- Analyzing commercial truck and bus safety data to strengthen national safety programs across U.S. highways.
How Is Volpe Center Harnessing AI Capabilities?
DOT said in early April that the Volpe Center has developed its own web-based chatbot for employees. Called chat.dot.gov, the cloud-hosted platform enables staff members to utilize large language models to support mission-critical tasks and boost productivity.
The AI chatbot was developed under the Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Assistant for Transportation, or AI-CHAT, initiative, sponsored by the DOT’s Highly Automated Systems Safety Center of Excellence.
