He will succeed Barbara Rusinko, who has led the NS&E organization over the past five years and is due to retire from the company in October after nearly 40 years of service, Bechtel said Wednesday.
In his current capacity, Howanitz manages the Reston, Virginia-based contractor’s business line that employs more than 27,000 personnel who support nuclear security initiatives at the Department of Energy and nuclear power projects in the commercial sector.
His oversight responsibilities will expand in his next role to include environmental cleanup efforts such as work on the $16.8 billion Hanford Waste Treatment Plant and waste retrieval support at the Sellafield Site in England.
Howanitz will also oversee Bechtel’s support services to eliminate the government’s chemical weapons stockpile disposal initiative, Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent development program and Mobile Launcher 2 design project.
