The U.S. Navy has awarded Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) a potential $1.47B contract to build the first landing platform dock under the LPD-17 Flight II program.
HII said Tuesday its Ingalls Shipbuilding division will perform detail design and construction of LPD 30, which will serve as the 14th vessel of the Navy’s San Antonio class.
In a separate announcement, the Department of Defense said Naval Sea Systems Command is the contracting activity and will obligate $1.37B at the time of award from the service branch’s fiscal 2018 shipbuilding and conversion funds.
LPD 30 will be designed with a flight deck, well deck, hospital facilities and other systems to help increase survivability and support missions such as power projection, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance and sea control.
The company has provided 11 of the San Antonio-class vessels to the Navy and is contracted to build an additional two ships.
HII aims to begin fabricating LPD 30 in 2020 and deliver it to the service by February 2025.
