Huntington Ingalls Industries‘ (NYSE: HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received a $94 million contract to obtain long-lead materials needed to build the U.S. Coast Guard‘s 10th National Security Cutter.
HII said Thursday it will use the funds to procure steel, main propulsion systems, generators, electrical switchboards and major castings for the next Legend-class ship.
Brian Cuccias, president of Ingalls Shipbuilding, said that NSCs will support the Coast Guard’s maritime security missions as well efforts to detect and intercept drugs and other contraband.
The company has supplied six NSCs to the Coast Guard and is slated to deliver the seventh cutter later this year.
The eighth NSC will undergo builder’s trials soon and the ninth ship is scheduled for launch this summer, HII added.
Legend-class cutters are the flagships of the Coast Guard’s cutter fleet and are intended to replace 12 Hamilton-class cutters that began operations in the 1960s.
Each ship features an aft launch and recovery area for two rigid hull inflatable boats as well as a flight deck for manned and unmanned rotary-wing aircraft platforms.
