Hanwha Defense USA has named retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Tom Anderson as president of U.S. shipbuilding.
A 34-year Navy veteran, Anderson previously served as program executive officer for ships and acting commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, overseeing ship acquisition, maintenance and modernization efforts across the fleet, Hanwha Defense said Monday. His extensive experience spans ship design, construction, maintenance and lifecycle management, as well as budget and program oversight for naval platforms and systems.
Anderson’s Responsibilities as US Shipbuilding President
In his new position, Anderson will direct the execution of Hanwha’s U.S. shipbuilding programs, manage shipyard operations and lead strategy development for future maritime projects. His responsibilities will also include strengthening shipbuilding infrastructure and workforce capacity to support Hanwha’s long-term expansion in the United States.
“Tom has had a distinguished and impactful naval career, and we are delighted to bring his deep industry expertise, creative thinking, and demonstrated leadership to Hanwha,” said Mike Smith, president and CEO of Hanwha Defense USA. “This is a pivotal time for the Navy and U.S. shipbuilding writ large. Tom brings a wealth of experience and unique perspectives that will accelerate the delivery of novel solutions to our customers’ most elusive industrial base challenges.”
Hanwha’s US Expansion
Hanwha entered the U.S. shipbuilding market in 2024 with its $100 million acquisition of Philly Shipyard, now known as Hanwha Philly Shipyard. The company is investing heavily in upgrading the facility’s capabilities through advanced technologies, workforce development and modern production systems. The initiative is expected to expand shipbuilding capacity and create thousands of skilled manufacturing jobs, supporting broader efforts to strengthen the U.S. maritime industrial base.
