Federal Chief Information Officer Greg Barbaccia, a 2026 Wash100 Award recipient, has announced that he will leave government service at the end of August, FedScoop reported Tuesday.

As federal technology leadership continues to evolve, government and industry executives will discuss priorities shaping civilian agencies at the Potomac Officers Club’s 2026 FedCiv Summit. According to FedScoop, Barbaccia, who also serves as chief artificial intelligence officer, informed members of the CIO Council in an email that his last day as federal CIO will be Aug. 31.

What Did OMB Say About Barbaccia’s Departure?

Federal News Network reported that the Office of Management and Budget confirmed that Barbaccia’s last day will be Aug. 31.

“Greg has done an excellent job as federal CIO and chief AI officer. He will certainly be missed when his time here comes to an end,” an OMB spokesperson said in a statement provided to FNN.

The latest move comes just months after Barbaccia announced the appointment of Thomas Flagg, former CIO at the Department of Education, as deputy federal CIO at OMB.

FedScoop reported that Flagg would become the default acting official following Barbaccia’s departure, citing an anonymous government CIO.

What Initiatives Has Barbaccia Led as Federal CIO?

As federal CIO, Barbaccia has initiated governmentwide efforts to strengthen agency CIO authority in technology acquisition. He has also promoted a “one-government” approach to digital services through federal website design standardization initiatives.

In addition, Barbaccia has served as the federal government’s service delivery lead under the Government Service Delivery Improvement Act, supporting user-centered improvements to public-facing government services.

Who Is Greg Barbaccia?

Barbaccia, a two-time Wash100 awardee, has served as the federal CIO since January 2025. He brings experience in technology leadership, digital transformation and organizational change to the position.

Before joining OMB, he was chief information security officer at financial services company Theorem. His private-sector experience also included leadership roles at Elementus and Palantir, and he founded Argus Vigilance, where he served as managing partner.

In May, he was named acting director of the General Services Administration’s Technology Transformation Services and senior adviser to GSA Administrator Edward Forst.
