Global Space Economy to Reach $1 Trillion by 2030 Amid Rising Threats

In space, new commercial entrants, an increasing number of satellites on orbit and cutting-edge technological advancements are contributing to a more competitive and opportunity-rich domain than ever before.

The global space economy is projected to reach more than $1 trillion by 2030, but with this growth, threats from foreign intelligence entities are on the rise too, according to a bulletin issued by United States intelligence agencies.

“Foreign intelligence entities (FIEs) recognize the importance of the commercial space industry to the US economy and national security, including the growing dependence of critical infrastructure on space-based assets,” stated a bulletin released by the FBI, National Counterintelligence and Security Center and U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

“FIEs use cyberattacks, strategic investment (including joint ventures and acquisitions), the targeting of key supply chain nodes, and other techniques to gain access to the US space industry,” it continued.

The warning comes at a time when U.S. intelligence agencies and space agencies are increasingly dependent on commercial space companies. The bulletin offers suggestions for mitigating and protecting against potential attacks and threats from foreign entities.
