General Dynamics‘ (NYSE: GD) Electric Boat subsidiary has received a $146.7 million contract modification to provide design support for the U.S. Navy‘s Columbia-class submarines.
The Defense Departmentsaid Thursday the award covers design work; shipbuilder, vendor component and technology development; engineering integration; concept design studies; cost-reduction initiatives; and full-scale prototype manufacturing and assembly.
Electric Boat will also provide engineering analysis, should-cost evaluations and integration support for the Ohio replacement submarines under the contract, DoD added.
Work will occur in Groton, Connecticut; Newport News, Virginia; Quonset, Rhode Island; and Bath, Maine, through September 2017.
The Naval Sea Systems Command will obligate $37 million from fiscal 2017 research, development, test and evaluation funds.
Columbia-class submarines will replace Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines and work to provide strategic deterrent support through the 2080s.
