General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) has secured a potential $1 billion contract to provide 227 infantry fighting vehicles to Romania’s armed forces.
The company said Friday its European land systems division will supply Piranha 5 units in six configurations as part of the Romanian army’s efforts to update its fleet of wheeled armored vehicles.
“We are very honored by this contract award as it reflects the high confidence and satisfaction the Romanian Army has in our vehicles,” said Oliver Durr, vice president of wheeled vehicles and managing director of General Dynamics European Land Systems – Mowag.
GDELS-Mowag and the Bucharest Mechanical Plant in Romaniawill produce the Piranha 5 vehicles in the country under a strategic cooperation and technology transfer project.
The Romanian military has fielded multiple configurations of the Piranha vehicle since 2006 to support various domestic and international missions.
