Bob Fortna, president of Fortinets (Nasdaq: FTNT) federal business, wrote in a Nextgov article published Friday that federal agencies should consider three cybersecurity threat trends and one is the tendency of threats to share public infrastructure.
To address the threat, he called on information technology teams at agencies to proactively monitor or block traffic flowing to or from common public infrastructure.
Ransomwares use of a more targeted approach is another trend agencies should bear in mind. IT teams at federal agencies should teach personnel how to detect phishing emails and other ransomware entryways and perform data restoration exercises and data backups.
Fortna cited the use of the live off the land strategy by adversaries as the third important trend agencies should keep in mind. IT teams should identify which tools are operating within the network and implement intent-based segmentation and trust policies to counter the strategy.
He also urged agencies to use the latest threat intelligence data to help mitigate cyber threats.
