Greg Burrill, 5G/networking alliance manager at Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL), said the transition to virtualization with 5G is driving innovative developments that could enable government agencies to better manage data workloads.
He wrote in an article published on Carahsoft.com that major hyperscaler cloud providers are working to facilitate the integration of telco workloads into the traditional information technology stack by offering 5G as a virtualized network function and combining it with cloud-hosted workloads.
In the article, Burrill discussed how 5G virtualization spurs the development of open ecosystems and virtualized radio access networks.
“In the next several years, there will likely be a concerted effort to fully virtualize RAN deployments and fully integrate telco workloads into the edge stack, enabling the support of use cases with the help of multi-access edge computing,” he stated.
With open ecosystems, he said the goal is to create a standard that will enable users to connect products from different providers into a 5G network.
“This approach will provide agencies flexibility regarding deployment, price points and supply chain resiliency,” Burrill noted.
The Dell Technologies executive talked about how the company works to tailor 5G to government agencies’ requirements by leveraging its expertise in network infrastructure, validating offerings from partners and working with multiple vendors to develop platforms.
Burrill noted that agencies have realized how 5G facilitates seamless connectivity to data and how such ecosystems should be designed in a secure manner by advancing the adoption of zero trust platforms.
