Eric Barnes, regional sales director at Dell Technologies, said artificial intelligence-enabled personal computers could help federal agencies improve productivity, strengthen security and support AI policy compliance by running AI models locally on devices.

In an article published on Carahsoft.com, Barnes wrote that AI PCs use neural processing units and graphics processing units to move AI processing from the cloud to the device itself, enabling users to access AI capabilities directly on endpoints.

Barnes said AI PCs can help users summarize documents and email threads, draft responses, extract action items and generate reports and presentations.

How Could AI PCs Help Federal Agencies?

According to Barnes, AI-capable PCs could help agencies accelerate mission outcomes while supporting government security, privacy and compliance requirements.

He said on-device processing allows sensitive data to remain on secure endpoints, which could strengthen control and auditability and help agencies enforce AI policies and inventories.

Barnes also cited use cases for AI PCs, including summarizing policy documents, drafting reports and emails, supporting translation and accessibility efforts and capturing notes.

“AI is reshaping day-to-day work by moving intelligence from the cloud onto the device itself,” he wrote.

What Are the Factors Agencies Should Consider When Adopting AI PCs?

Barnes said agencies should identify mission needs and determine which AI workloads should run locally on devices and which should remain in cloud or data center environments.

He also said agencies should control which AI applications and models employees can access to help prevent sensitive information from being entered into unauthorized tools.

According to Barnes, agencies should provide employees with guidance on safe AI use and maintain human oversight for sensitive workflows and citizen-facing services.

Barnes added that agencies should integrate AI PCs into endpoint management, patching and policy tools and apply role-based controls to manage AI capabilities for different groups of users.

How Does Dell Help Agencies Deploy AI PCs?

According to Barnes, Dell identifies high-value use cases for AI PCs, such as drafting responses, summarizing case files and retrieving guidance, before helping agencies design pilot projects around those efforts.

He also said Dell’s AI PCs bring local AI acceleration to endpoints, allowing sensitive workloads to remain on devices while connecting to agency data, applications and AI platforms operating in cloud and data center environments.

Barnes added that Dell helps agencies deploy AI PCs through an end-to-end AI fabric designed to integrate governance, training and change management capabilities.
