CMMC Accreditation Body Preps Training Course for DoD Cybersecurity Assessors

The accreditation body for the Department of Defense's Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program is developing a course to train independent assessors who will evaluate contractors' ability to comply with CMMC requirements, Nextgov reported Thursday.

Ben Tchoubineh, chair of the CMMC-AB training committee, said the panel expects to kick off the first phase of its course in three to six months and formally launch its program by early 2021.

He added that the board intends to recruit 60 experienced auditors for the first class of CMMC assessment trainees who will undergo a certification exam upon completion of the program.

CMMC-AB plans to create a “body of knowledge" detailing goals for various levels of assessor certification, according to Tchoubineh. The group also seeks licensed publishing and training partners to develop the curriculum and facilitate training activities, respectively.

In April, the DoD selected the National Institute of Standards and Technology to create certification requirements for CMMC assessors.

Katie Arrington, chief information security officer for the defense acquisition and sustainment office and 2020 Wash100 Award recipient, previously said the DoD expects to issue solicitations with CMMC requirements by November.

She also directed CMMC-AB to ensure that all veterans are eligible to apply as CMMC assessors.
