Shaun Bierweiler, president of Cloudera’s (NYSE: CLDR) government solutions business, has said agencies planning to adopt artificial intelligence should establish a comprehensive data strategy, which includes a data platform that takes into consideration governance and security from the start.
Bierweiler wrote the data platform and strategy should safeguard agencies from vendor lock-in arrangement and accommodate different types of data.
“Specifically, the strategy should encompass data at rest and in motion and have the flexibility to support current and future data formats so that agencies have the opportunity and ability to achieve the promise of AI,” he added.
Bierweiler noted that open-source approaches and software will play an important role as data moves to the cloud. “In addition, the operating systems and applications that power automation and AI-enabled capabilities, among others, will continue to be built on open-source platforms that set new standards for IT operations,” he said.
He called on agencies seeking to apply AI to determine first the insights they want to derive from their data. They should also do an inventory of their data, examine the applicability, completeness and integrity of their data and remove existing cultural and physical silos that serve as barriers to data access.
