BlueHalo has secured a potential $76 million other transaction agreement with the U.S. Army to develop a 20-kilowatt class laser weapon for countering drone threats.
The company said Tuesday it aims to build the Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser prototype for installation on the service branch’s Infantry Squad Vehicle and help soldiers perform counter-unmanned aircraft system missions.
The Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office issued the OTA award after accepting delivery of the company-built LOCUST laser technology for use in conjunction with the Palletized High Energy Laser prototype.
“Our LOCUST LWS has successfully engaged and defeated numerous drone threats across a wide variety of background, clutter, slant range and threat conditions,” said Jonathan Moneymaker, CEO of BlueHalo and a previous Wash100 awardee.
The artificial intelligence-powered optical and laser system supports target identification and engagement using the directed energy approach.
The OTA’s potential amount comprises a $45.7 million base value and $30.2 million in options.
