Graham Corp., manufacturer of critical components for defense, space, energy and process industries, has secured a $136.5 million follow-on contract from the U.S. Navy to support the Virginia-class submarine program. Under the contract, Graham said its subsidiary Barber-Nichols will provide advanced engineering and manufacturing capabilities to the Navy.
The deal extends Barber-Nichols’ work on the program through February 2034. Graham is a long-time partner of HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding, which is building Virginia-class submarines for the Navy.

“This substantial contract award reinforces our position as a trusted supplier of critical naval components and builds upon our successful execution of previous contracts for Virginia Class Submarines,” according to Michael E. Dixon, general manager of Barber-Nichols.
What is Barber‐Nichols?
Based in Arvada, Colorado, Barber‐Nichols is a turbomachinery business that supplies compressors, pumps, turbines and other components.
In 2014, the company received a multi‐year contract from HII NNS to produce MK 21 air turbine pumps for the Virginia-class submarine program.
In 2020, the firm also secured a spot in the Navy’s $73.7 million contract to build undersea warfare technologies.
Update on the Virginia-Class Submarines
The Navy recently awarded a contract modification to HII NNS and General Dynamics Electric Boat, which serves as the prime contractor and lead design yard for the Virginia-class submarines, for the construction of two more fast-attack submarines. The award brings the total value of the 2024 Block V contract awarded to the companies to $18.45 billion.
