Amazon Web Services has unveiled a new business segment that will focus on bringing AWS platforms and services to the space market.
Clint Crosier, a retired U.S. Air Force major general and former director of space force planning at the U.S. Space Force, will lead the company’s Aerospace and Satellite Solutions business segment, Teresa Carlson, vice president of worldwide public sector at AWS and a 2020 Wash100 Award winner, wrote in a blog post published Tuesday.
The new business unit will work with partners and clients to introduce new space data processing services, reimagine space system architectures and provide scalable and secure cloud platforms in support of government missions and space companies.
"With a background in cloud computing, it’s exciting to see Amazon Web Services extend that experience to space, fostering collaborations with Lockheed Martin to help solve some of the world’s toughest problems," said Rick Ambrose, executive vice president of space at Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and a 2020 Wash100 awardee. "Together, we share a vision to help our customers access data faster, and gain new insights from sensors in space that make data even more accessible."
Carlson wrote that AWS Ground Station provides a hint of what novel platforms and services the company can bring to the space market through its new business segment. AWS Ground Station is a fully managed service that allows customers to communicate with their satellites and downlink, distribute and process satellite data within minutes.
