An Austal shipbuilding business in Mobile, Alabama, will design and build a 16th Expeditionary Fast Transport vessel for the U.S. Navy, under a $230.5 million contract modification.
Austal USA expects to start its construction of EPF 16 later this year and aims to deliver the next Spearhead-class ship sometime in 2025, the company said Tuesday.
EPF 16, the third Flight II ship in its class, will feature an operating room, a postsurgical recovery area and a flight deck where the V-22 military tiltrotor aircraft can land.
The award is a fixed–priced incentive option exercised under the Navy’s contract with Austal USA, the Department of Defense said.
