Army Awards Raytheon $512M Contract for ISR Radar Development, Sustainment

The U.S. Army has awarded Raytheon a potential $512.2 million contract to support the development, production, fielding and long-term sustainment of synthetic aperture radar/moving target indicator radar used in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

The Army’s ongoing transformation is reshaping how the service modernizes, acquires technology and builds a unified network to support future operations. At the 2026 Army Summit, senior leaders and industry partners will discuss how recent structural and acquisition changes are influencing the Army’s path toward its 2030 objectives, and what those shifts mean for the industrial base. Join the conversation on June 18 to gain insight into the priorities guiding the Army’s next phase of modernization.

The award is structured as a cost-plus-fixed-fee and firm-fixed-price contract, the Department of War said Friday. Only one bid was received. Specific work locations and funding amounts will be determined at the task order level. The work is expected to be completed by December 2036.

In a previously issued request for information on SAM.gov, the Army stated it is pursuing SAR/MTI sensors for manned aerial ISR platforms and identified the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar System-2B/C, developed by Raytheon, as a candidate system to meet ISR requirements.

What Is Raytheon’s Track Record in SAR Radar Programs?

Raytheon has previously delivered SAR capabilities to the U.S. Air Force. In 2022, the company received a $184 million contract to supply ASARS-2B sensors and related equipment to the service branch. That award followed earlier Raytheon work to upgrade ASARS-2B with electronically scanned array antennas for the USAF’s U-2 Dragon Lady reconnaissance aircraft.

The latest SAR contract comes as the DOW increases investment in intelligence and sensing technologies. The Pentagon’s fiscal year 2026 research, development, test and evaluation budget request includes a significant funding increase for ground moving target indicator programs.
