Johns Hopkins University Secures $530M USAF Contract for Nuclear Tech R&D Services

Johns Hopkins University will provide technology research and development services to the U.S. Air Force’s nuclear enterprise under a potential 10-year, $530 million contract.

USAF issued a $23.7 million task order for the Maryland-based university to conduct R&D efforts associated with the branch’s future Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent System and is obligating $4.5 million in initial funds for the first order, the Department of Defense said Monday.

Work under the sole-source, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract will support work on a pair of intercontinental ballistic missile systems as the military service aims to recapitalize its ICBM fleet.

The AF Nuclear Weapons Center expects contractor services to be available through July 15, 2031.

Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) is helping USAF build the weapon replacement system for the aging LGM-30 Minuteman III ICBM under a potential $13.3B contract awarded in September 2020.
