GreyNoise Intelligence has appointed Andrew Thompson as senior vice president of adversary operations, one of four senior hires the company announced as it builds out its government business.
Thompson joined from Google’s threat intelligence group, GreyNoise said Wednesday. He started in August, according to his LinkedIn profile.
What Background Does Andrew Thompson Bring?
Thompson served as head of global signals operations at Google, where his teams drew intelligence from Mandiant intrusion investigations, security operations, product telemetry, commercial vendors and partners.
He spent nearly three years at the company, having arrived through its acquisition of Mandiant, where he had worked for more than six years. At Mandiant, he led advanced research and collection, served as director of adversary operations and built several intelligence functions from the ground up, including the company’s first multidisciplinary intelligence collection operation.
Thompson served in the Marine Corps, with assignments in infantry, counterintelligence, human intelligence and cyberspace operations. He holds a bachelor’s degree in intelligence studies from American Military University.
Who Else Did GreyNoise Hire?
GreyNoise also appointed Mark Mager as head of adversary engagement. He previously held endpoint security research roles at Elastic and Endgame. He earlier led the research and development of computer network operations tools at Battelle and Lockheed Martin.
Steve Miller joined as principal threat researcher after serving as AI threats mission lead at Google’s threat intelligence group, where he built programs tracking AI threat activity. He previously held threat intelligence positions at Microsoft and Mandiant, worked as a digital forensics researcher for the Department of Homeland Security, and served in Army Intelligence and Security Command as a program manager at the National Security Agency.
Joe Lampert took the role of director for national security solutions. A retired Army major with more than 20 years of service, he held intelligence and cyber warfare assignments supporting U.S. Cyber Command and U.S. Strategic Command, and most recently worked as senior account director at Recorded Future.
Ash Devata, CEO of GreyNoise, said adversaries are using AI to exploit internet-facing devices within minutes of a vulnerability surfacing, and that routers, VPNs and firewalls generate little telemetry because they cannot run security agents. He said the four hires understand the role real-time threat intelligence plays in defending those systems.
GreyNoise said more than 400 government agencies across Five Eyes members, NATO and allied nations use its threat data.
