Jules Hurst III has been confirmed by the Senate to serve as under secretary of war (comptroller) and chief financial officer, succeeding Mike McCord, who served in the role from 2021 until his resignation in January 2025. The Office of the Under Secretary of War Comptroller/CFO announced the confirmation via LinkedIn on Saturday.
Congressional records show that the Senate confirmed the nomination on Aug. 7 by a 51-47 vote. The Senate received Hurst’s nomination from President Donald Trump on May 20.
What Are Hurst’s Responsibilities as Comptroller?
Hurst, who previously performed the duties of comptroller and CFO from August 2025 to May 2026, will serve as the principal adviser to the secretary of war on financial and budgetary matters, including the development and execution of the department’s annual budget. Hurst will also collaborate with the Department of War to advance a $1.5 trillion budget request and pursue a department-wide clean audit.
Who Is Jules Hurst?
Hurst most recently served as assistant secretary of the Army for manpower and reserve affairs and performed the duties of under secretary of the Army for personnel and readiness. He previously worked in the Office of the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives as a defense adviser and legislative director.
His military assignments included serving as a legislative liaison, congressional fellow, strategist and executive officer in the U.S. Army. Hurst also helped launch Project Maven, the Pentagon initiative that applies artificial intelligence and machine learning to defense operations.
Earlier in his career, he served as a targeting officer at U.S. Central Command and an intelligence officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency.
