Retired U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Frank “Trey” Whitworth III has been appointed president of national security at r4 Federal.

The company said Whitworth will guide strategic initiatives focused on advancing artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and operational decision support for government partners. Whitworth will also help strengthen r4’s capacity to deliver trusted AI tools to government stakeholders.
Who Is Frank Whitworth?
Whitworth is a national security leader with nearly four decades of experience in the Navy and the intelligence community. A four-time Wash100 Award winner, Whitworth most recently served as the director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, where he led one of the federal government’s key intelligence organizations until his retirement.
What Experience Does Whitworth Bring to r4 Federal?
Whitworth brings an extensive background that spans operational command and intelligence oversight across complex mission environments. As director of NGA, he led the agency’s efforts to deliver timely, relevant and accurate geospatial intelligence in support of national security. He also drove the advancement of NGA Maven, an AI and machine learning initiative within the intelligence community.
The r4 executive has held a range of senior command and intelligence positions, including leadership roles within Central Command and the Kennedy Irregular Warfare Center. He held intelligence posts supporting the Joint Staff, Africa Command and Joint Special Operations Command. He also served with Naval Forces Central Command and the 5th Fleet, with multiple deployments that included three tours in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.
