MITRE has appointed Christopher Land, a national security legal executive, as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary to the nonprofit organization’s board of trustees.

Mark Peters, president and CEO of MITRE and a 2026 Wash100 awardee, welcomed Land’s appointment.
“He will play a key role in the stewardship, governance, and execution of MITRE’s mission. In his new role, Land will oversee enterprisewide legal, compliance and regulatory matters and organizational risk management and support for the board of trustees. He will also lead MITRE’s in-house legal team and advise leadership and employees on issues including cybersecurity, contracting, intellectual property, international operations, healthcare law, employment and national security.
Who Is Christopher Land?
Land most recently served as general counsel at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he supported the lab’s national security mission. He oversaw litigation, regulatory compliance, IP, employment matters and ethical conduct.
Before LLNL, he was general counsel and VP for legal affairs at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In that capacity, he advised the president and director and provided counsel to the board of directors on legal, litigation, compliance, national security, employment and governance issues.
