Jason Matheny, former director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, will assume the dual role of president and CEO at RAND Corp. on July 5.
He will succeed Michael Rich, who has been at the helm of the Santa Monica, California-based policy think tank since 2011, RAND said Tuesday.
“Jason has long respected RAND’s rigor and integrity and has been a voracious consumer of RAND analysis for decades, including while serving in senior U.S. government leadership positions,” said Michael Leiter, chair of the board of trustees at RAND.
“From our first discussions with him, we were struck by his belief in RAND’s ability to help solve the world’s most important public policy challenges and by his vision for supporting future generations of policy researchers and leaders,” added Leiter.
Matheny, an economist, civil servant and scientist, most recently led technology and national security policy at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and National Security Council. He also served as founding director of the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University.
He also held positions at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, World Bank, Oxford University, Princeton University and the Center for Biosecurity.
