Nand Mulchandani, most recently chief technology officer at the Department of Defense’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, has been appointed the first CTO at the CIA.
He will bring to the role over 25 years of government and industry experience and help advance innovation in support of the CIA’s mission, the agency said Friday.
CIA Director William Burns said he has prioritized technology since his confirmation and the creation of the new CTO role is a key aspect of that effort.
“I am delighted Nand has joined our team and will bring his extensive experience to this crucial new role,” added Burns, a 2022 Wash100 Award winner.
Mulchandani also led JAIC as acting director.
He co-founded and served as CEO of several startups that were later acquired by major tech companies, including Oblix, Determina, OpenDNS and ScaleXtreme. Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) and VMware (NYSE: VMW) acquired Oblix and Determina, respectively. Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) purchased OpenDNS, while Citrix (Nasdaq: CTXS) bought ScaleXtreme.
