Small satellite launch company Virgin Orbit has changed the name of its U.S.-incorporated subsidiary Vox Space to Virgin Orbit National Systems to highlight the company’s presence in the national security space market.
The rebranded subsidiary also welcomed Craig Cooning, a former executive at Boeing (NYSE: BA) and a 2015 Wash100 inductee, as a member of the unit’s board of directors, Virgin Orbit said Thursday.
Cooning served as president of Boeing’s network and space systems business from July 2014 to September 2016 and worked as board chairman at United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT).
Virgin Orbit formed its government-focused business in 2017 and has deployed national security payloads to space via three flights to date.
“By bringing the brand under which we serve our national security customers into even closer alignment with the rest of Virgin Orbit’s established market presence, we show our laser focus on supporting the readiness of our national security space mission partners,” said Mark Baird, president of Virgin Orbit National Systems.
