Navy Selects Nebraska-Based Contractor for $1.7B Submarine Dry Dock Extension Project
Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Mid-Atlantic received two non-price proposals for the construction project and obligated $70 million at the time of award from the branch’s fiscal year 2021 military construction funds, the Department of Defense said Friday.
The firm-fixed-price contract has a face value of $1.73 billion, which the Navy will finance over seven increments from FY 2022 through FY 2027, and will reach its ceiling value if the service exercises all options.
The contractor will build northern and western bays for the superflood basin area of the Maine-based shipyard’s Dry Dock #1 where engineers will maintain and overhaul Virginia-class submarines.
New construction efforts will involve concrete flooring, new pump well systems, mooring hardware, mechanical and electrical systems, a separation wall between the two dry docks and other accessories needed for dry dock operations.
The Navy will change the name of the dock’s existing bay to Dry Dock #1 East, which will be complemented by the two new additional docks. The renamed area will receive interior modifications and a new pump well system.
DOD expects contract work to conclude by June 2028.
