DOE Opens Solicitation for $3B Radioactive Waste Management Contract

The Department of Energy has started its bid solicitation process for a potential 10-year, $3 billion contract for management and operation services at a radioactive waste disposal facility near Carlsbad, New Mexico.

DOE said Thursday it will conduct a full and open competition for the cost-plus-award-fee, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity Waste Isolation Pilot Plant M&O contract with a four-year base period and six one-year options.

Proposals are due July 19, according to the official notice to prospective offerors. WIPP services also include centralized characterization project support, transportation, testing and program operations.

Nuclear Waste Partnership, a joint venture between Amentum and BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT), currently manages the WIPP and DOE’s National Transuranic Waste program under a $296 million contract extension awarded in October 2020.

The geologic repository was built to keep defense-generated transuranic waste approximately 2,150 feet underground.
