Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has secured a potential five-year, $3.6 billion contract to develop, test and integrate an airborne communications relay system for the U.S. Air Force.
The company will also help the service branch operate and maintain payloads and ground stations of the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node, the Department of Defense said Thursday.
According to Northrop, the BACN is designed to work with the Global Hawk unmanned aircraft system and help military operators collect data. The company noted it originally developed the node as a technology demonstrator.
The Air Force will obligate $23.7 on the initial task order under the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract.
Contract work will take place in San Diego, California, and other locations abroad. DOD expects the company to complete services by Jan. 24, 2026.
