Melvin Greer, chief data scientist at Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), has been appointed fellow-in-residence and senior adviser to the FBI’s information technology applications and data division.

“Melvin is the first executive to come to the Information and Technology Branch under the Special Government Employee Program, which allows him to remain at Intel and serve his country,” Michael Gavin, assistant director of the bureau’s ITADD, said in a statement published Friday.

Gavin added that Greer will use his technical and leadership experience to help the bureau come up with its data management strategy. Greer will specifically leverage his expertise in deployment models, advanced architectures and hybrid cloud computing to help ITADD address data science-related challenges.

At Intel, Greer oversees the company’s data science platform through the use of cognitive computing, machine learning and artificial intelligence to turn data into strategic asset. He is a data science program professor at Dallas-based Southern Methodist University, a fellow at the National Cybersecurity Institute and an adjunct faculty member at Johns Hopkins University.
