The State Department has given Japan the go-ahead to purchase the Boeing-built (NYSE: BA) KC-46A Pegasus tanker aircraft and related support from the U.S. government under a potential $1.9 billion foreign military sales agreement.
Japan asked to procure four KC-46A aerial refueling planes equipped with Raytheon-made (NYSE: RTN) ALR-69A radar warning receivers and MAGR 2K miniaturized airborne GPS receivers, as well as Northrop Grumman-built (NYSE: NOC) AN/AAQ-24(V) large aircraft infrared countermeasures, the Defense Security Cooperation Agencysaid Wednesday.
DSCA said Japan will use the aircraft and related services to support security operations in the Pacific region and efforts to build up the countrys national security posture.
Other major defense equipment that the deal covers include a spare of Pratt &Whitney-built PW4062 turbofan engine as well as guardian laser terminal assemblies and ultra-violet missile warning systems for Northrops LAIRCM system.
The FMS transaction also includes KC-46A airframes, AN/ARC-210 radios, APX-119 identification friend or foe transponders, repair parts, engineering, technical assistance, training resources, publications, depot maintenance, contractor representative support, flight test and certification, and logistics services.
