Air Force Picks Raytheon, L-3, ViaSat for Wideband Satcom Tactical Service Demo Contracts

Raytheon (NYSE: RTN), L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) and ViaSat (Nasdaq: VSAT) have won separate contracts to provide protected tactical service field demonstration support services to the U.S. Air Force.

The service branch awarded the cost-plus-incentive-fee contracts through a competitive acquisition process with five proposals received, the Defense Department said Thursday.

The companies will use and demonstrate the Wideband Global Satellite Communications system and commercial satcom in an effort to deliver anti-jam wideband communications to tactical users.

WGS is a constellation of military communications satellites built to provide long-distance communications in both X– and Ka-bands for U.S. uniformed personnel, government staff and international partners.

The military branch awarded a contract worth $39.9 million to Raytheon, while L-3™s contract is worth $38 million and ViaSat™s is valued at $33.3 million.

Work will take place at the contractors’ respective facilities in Massachusetts, Utah and California through Sept. 30, 2020.

DoD added the service branch™s space and missile systems center will obligate $11 million each to the contractors from fiscal 2016 research, development, test and evaluation funds at the time of award.
