The State Department has approved Japan™s request to procure Standard Missile-2 Block IIIB missiles and related support from the U.S. government under a potential $821 million foreign military sales agreement.
Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) and BAE Systems‘ U.S. subsidiary will serve as principal contractors for the FMS sale that covers 246 SM-2 Block IIIB missiles and MK 13 MOD 0 vertical launching system canisters, the Defense Security Cooperation Agencysaid Tuesday.
Raytheon builds the SM-2 air defense missiles and BAE Systems Inc. manufactures the canisters designed to launch the Block II and Block III variants.
Japan plans to integrate the missiles with its two future destroyer ships based on updated Atago-class hull for use in maritime-based anti-aerial warfare missions as well as supplement its missile inventory, according to DSCA.
The FMS transaction also includes technical documentation, operator manuals, logistics and engineering support services.
DSCA said it notified Congress of the potential sale Friday.
