Agentic AI is catching a lot of attention among government officials for its potential to streamline services and improve how bureaucracies do business. But what exactly is agentic AI and how does it work?
Think of agentic AI as digital agents working on one’s behalf. Instead of relying on humans to constantly issue instructions, agentic AI behaves autonomously using AI models and systems to perform tasks. The agentic AI program comprehends the goal of the operator and the context of what the operator is trying to achieve, according to Harvard Business Review.
How Agentic AI Works
To be more autonomous, agentic AI uses a complicated arrangement of different machine learning, natural language processing and automation technologies. Though agentic AI is similar to generative AI models like those used by the well-known ChatGPT, they are different in multiple ways.
One is that agentic AI is designed to make decisions. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is centered on developing content. Another is that agentic AI does not depend on human prompts to act. Instead, agentic AI is designed to maximize objectives or goals, such as improving sales or booking travel arrangements for a vacation.

Agentic AI Impacts on Government
So what does agentic AI mean for government agencies looking to do business more efficiently and effectively? Lots. Agentic AI promises to make mundane office tasks more efficient, creating more time for employees. It also could provide people with all-day access to government services and information, according to Route Fifty.
AI agents could streamline how people interact with local government agencies, according to Forbes, making information faster available and more accurate. An app called SuperCity wants to make answers to city-related questions, such as parking rules or local regulations, more easily available with reliable answers. SuperCity also wants to allow residents to pay city bills and report issues faster.
Agentic AI also shows promise for federal agencies. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office created an AI-centered search program when it had a problem finding correct information in an efficient manner because of an overwhelming amount of patent data.
Agentic AI and National Security
Lastly, agentic AI is poised to revolutionize national security, according to NextGov/FCW. AI agents can reportedly improve the movement of equipment and people, anticipate maintenance requirements and regulate inventory quantities to make sure items are readily available. This should improve readiness and reduce downtime.
Agentic AI can actively adjust personnel schedules based on real-time requirements, proactively designate critical personnel and resources, and examine data to accelerate response times. This has the potential to slash administrative work and improve operational readiness in challenging realms.
