Dell Technologies’ Ed Hicks: Federated Learning Could Help Agencies Perform AI-Assisted Analytics at the Edge

Ed Hicks, business development manager for federal and artificial intelligence at Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL), said government agencies looking to implement AI-assisted data analytics at the edge should consider adopting federated learning to rapidly generate insights from data while ensuring information security and privacy.

Hicks wrote in an article published on Carahsoft.com that federated learning allows organizations to facilitate the movement of AI models instead of moving data across the network.

“With federated learning, we can leverage the data while leaving it in its protected data lake. Personally identifiable information, for example, stays in an enclave where it can remain protected from interception,” he said.

The Dell Technologies executive cited how federated learning backed by zero trust architecture and secure AI models could help agencies maintain data security and privacy.

Hicks also mentioned how the company works to help agencies use AI-assisted analytics in a way that allows them to implement zero trust, ensure the security of AI algorithms and protect data where it resides.

“When agencies have existing hardware that cannot be replaced, it’s more strategic to change the way we incorporate AI,” he added.
