Smiths Detection to Help TSA Deploy Screening Systems Under $97M Contract

Smiths Detection won a potential $96.8M contract to supply computed tomography screening systems for the Transportation Security Administration.

The company will produce 300 CT scanners and ancillary equipment to help agency personnel detect potential threats in travelers’ carry-on luggage, TSA said Thursday.

TSA plans to begin deploying the machines at U.S. airports in the summer and continue deployment efforts through 2020 as part of the Advanced Technology X-ray program.

The agency launched a pilot program to implement CT technology in 2017 and is implementing other CT platforms as part of efforts to update operational and automated detection algorithms.
