William Amelio, acting CEO of Avnet (NYSE: AVT) over the past two months, has been appointed to the position on a full-time basis by the board of directors at the Phoenix, Arizona-based technology distributor.
He has served on the company’s board since 2014 and brings more than 35 years of business management experience to his new role, Avnet said Thursday.
“The board unanimously agreed that making him the permanent CEO was in the best interest of our customers, employees and shareholders, ” said Avnet Chairman William Schumann.
Amelio started his career at IBM‘s (NYSE: IBM) microelectronics technology division in 1979 and was later promoted to general manager of worldwide operations at the technology firm’s personal computer division.
He also previously served as senior vice president and president for the Asia-Pacific/Japan region at Dell as well as held dual roles as president and CEO at Lenovo and helicopter services provider CHC Group.
