Steve Spano
Steve Spano, regional vice president for public sector at Tableau, has said there are three misconceptions surrounding data analytics that government agencies should address and break down to leverage data as a strategic asset.
One of the myths Spano debunked is that data reporting is hard. Spano wrote that agencies should shift from spreadsheet-centric reporting towards adopting an analytics platform that could enable them to analyze data from disparate sources.
“With richer capabilities and an intuitive user experience, a modern data analytics platform radically redefines reporting, making it an easy, insightful process,” he added.
Another misconception agencies tend to believe is that they need a team of specialized data scientists and other data personnel to process large sets of data. Spano noted that organizations should know that they only need to transform their existing team into “data people” by establishing and prioritizing a strong data culture.
“Data-driven organizations have learned that it’s essential to promote a data-centric mindset across the entire organization,” Spano wrote. “This empowers everyone to use analytics for deeper insight and understanding.”
The third myth concerns with artificial intelligence. Spano discussed how AI and machine learning could help agencies improve the delivery of citizen services by drafting documents, answering questions and other administrative burdens. He also cited how Tableau supports the use of AI and machine learning capabilities through its Ask Data and Explain Data tools.
