The State Department has cleared Ukraine’s request to purchase F-16 Fighting Falcon sustainment services for $266.4 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Tuesday the proposed foreign military sale is aimed at strengthening the country’s capability to meet current and future threats.
Ukraine to Buy Military Equipment, Services
According to a DCSA press release, Ukraine wants to acquire a Joint Mission Planning System and AN/PYQ-10 Simple Key Loaders. The FMS will also include weapons software, spare and repair parts, personnel training, and engineering, technical, and logistics support.
Lockheed Martin, Pratt & Whitney and Belgium-based company Sabena will serve as the principal contractors of the transaction.
International Support for Ukraine Continues
The approval comes weeks after the government of the United Kingdom committed to a $2.9 billion loan for Ukraine to support the Eastern European nation’s fight against Russia. The funding is part of the Group of Seven’s Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration, or ERA, Loans for Ukraine initiative.
The ERA Loans come from revenues generated by the immobilization of Russia’s sovereign assets. In October, the G7 pledged that the loan would be disbursed to aid the Ukrainian military and the nation’s reconstruction efforts before the end of 2025.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury also recently announced the disbursement of $20 billion under the ERA Loans.
