Systems Planning & Analysis Acquires Group W to Expand Defense Modeling, Simulation Capabilities

Systems Planning & Analysis has acquired Group W, a Vienna, Virginia–based data science and defense analytics firm specializing in modeling, simulation and wargaming support for the Department of Defense.

What Does the Acquisition Involve?

The acquisition brings together two providers of defense analytical tools and expertise that support U.S. and allied defense programs, SPA said.

“SPA has a long history of working with Group W and today we unite the leading providers and users of widely-used DoD modeling and simulation tools across the system, mission, and campaign levels,” Rich Sawchak, CEO of SPA, commented on the acquisition. “The combination of the two firms creates the most robust analytical defense modeling and simulation company serving the global allied national security ecosystem.”

How Does the Deal Advance SPA’s National Security Mission?

The transaction expands SPA’s capabilities, supporting its work with the DOD, intelligence community and homeland security customers.

“Group W brings cutting-edge capabilities, approaches, and expertise that will enhance SPA’s position as the trusted partner of choice for defense, intelligence, and homeland security clients,” said David Wodlinger, managing partner at Arlington Capital Partners, SPA’s private equity owner. “This acquisition builds on SPA’s history and reinforces their established expertise, evolving capabilities, and commitment to delivering impactful data-driven analysis to enhance national security strategies and operational effectiveness.”

Founded more than 20 years ago, Group W applies mathematical techniques, critical thinking and high-fidelity tools to generate insights that support analysts and researchers and inform defense authorities.

According to Trase Travers, CEO of Group W, the company’s integration with SPA will open new opportunities for employees and clients while advancing the next generation of analytical modeling, simulation and digital wargaming capabilities.

The acquisition follows SPA’s expansion of its global headquarters with a recent purchase of a 239,000-square-foot office building in Alexandria, Virginia.
