Raytheon Helps NASA Manage Satellite Data With Cloud Tech; David Appel Quoted

TYSONS CORNER, VA, March 26, 2021 — Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX) has helped NASA build a cloud-based system to process data from the agency’s Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich climate monitoring satellite as part of the Earth Science Data and Information Systems project, ExecutiveBiz reported March 17.

The company said March 16 its intelligence and space unit worked with the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to store satellite data in the Earthdata Cloud platform using the Cumulus application.

“NASA is required to keep all data in perpetuity,” said David Appel, vice president of defense and civil solutions at Raytheon Intelligence & Space.

“The data storage challenge becomes that much greater with the petabytes upon petabytes of data that satellites generate every day.”
